Shanghai Government Scholarship

The Shanghai Government Scholarship program was initiated at Shanghai Maritime University in 2007. This project exists for the financial assistance of international students applying for degree programs.
There are there types of scholarships:

Amount

Class A
Class A is full scholarship for excellent prospective students applying for master’s or doctoral degree programs. This scholarship covers tuition, fundamental teaching materials and accommodation (at foreign student dormitories); it provides insurance for major diseases and accidents, and living allowance will be provided monthly (RMB 1700yuan per month for master’s students and RMB 2000yuan per month for PHD students).

Class B
Class B is semi-scholarship for excellent prospective students applying for undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral degree programs. It covers tuition and fundamental teaching materials as well as insurance for major diseases and accidents.

Class C
Class C is awarded to international students who excel in moral and academic performances in the long term program.

Eligible Candidates

Class A&B scholarship
1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health;
2. Applicants must meet the education and age requirements:
   Those applying for doctorate studies must have a master's degree and be under 40 years of age;
   Those applying for master’s programs must have received a bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35;
   Those applying for undergraduate studies must have graduated from high school and must be between age of 18 and 25.
3. Excellent grades, outstanding academic and overall performance;
4. Must not have been awarded any other kinds of scholarships

Class C Scholarship
1. Applicants who have studied at SMU for over 1 semester and have not applied for the ceasing of studies, the retaining of student status or the extension of school length.
2. Applicants who have studied at Exchange Program or Joint-program for more than 3 months.
3. A diligent and industrious attitude towards their studies and active participation in SMU’s social activities.
4. Must not have been awarded any other Chinese government scholarships at the time of application

Application Time

A and B Scholarship: Applicants should apply for the scholarship before the end of May every year.
C Scholarship: Applicants should apply for the scholarship before the end of June every year.

Application Documents

Class A & Class B

International Students should apply for the Shanghai Government Scholarships A and B at the same time as applying for the degree program in each academic year.
1. Application Form. Applicants should apply  below and fill in the application form and the corresponding scholarship application documents faithfully according to the requirements stipulated in Class A and B Scholarship online;
2. Diplomas and degrees (notarized versions, in notarized Chinese or English);
3. Related transcripts (notarized version, in notarized Chinese or English);
4. Statement of purpose. Around 1000 words for master’s degree candidates; around 1500 words for doctoral degree candidates. Topics to cover: study and work experience, academic research results; planned research proposals and personal development objectives after graduation;
5. Catalogue and abstracts of published papers, as well as other documents that can prove academic ability;
6. Two recommendation letters from professor or associate professor, in Chinese or English;
7. Photocopy of valid passport;
8. photo;
9. Copy of Health Certificate.

Class C
1. Application form: Applicants should fill in the corresponding scholarship application documents faithfully according to the qualifications stipulated in Class C and mail it to IEC;
2. Transcripts of the previous year or previous semester;
3. Certificates and evidence of participation in various activities.
